OMG, Your BFF What?
So, you've bonded with your kids as they've shown you their favorite online destinations. You've helped them find fun, safe alternatives they may not have considered, and had some frank talks about staying safe online. You've set time limits and moved the computer out of your child's room. You're randomly checking emails and using parental controls to block offensive sites and monitor chats, only to discover that your children are communicating in some foreign language they all seem to understand, and you're still in the dark!
Straight From a Bored Teenager's Mouth
Yesterday, I found my 13 year old twisting her hair and pulling it across her mouth while staring blankly off into space and knew I'd found my opportunity.
"Bored, Punkin'?" I asked.
"Kinda"
"Well, how about doing me a favor?" She looked frantically for a way out of the room, realized I was standing in the only doorway, and sighed.
"I guess"
Her eyes lit up and I was rewarded with a "Kewl!" when I asked her to make a list of "all those abbreviations you use online and in text messages" for my blog.
Half an hour later I had this list, and a not quite so bored teenager:
BFF-best friend 4ever
BRB-be right back
BTW-by the way
IDC-I don't care
IDK-I don't know
ILY-I love you
ILY2-self explanatory
LOL-laughing out loud
LTMQ-laughing to myself quietly
NBD-no big deal
NM-nothing much
N2M-nothing too much
OMG-oh my god
TMI-too much information
TTYL-talk to you later
W/E-whatever
Stuff you REALLY Don't Want to See
ADR-address
ADDY-address
ASL-age/sex/location
LMIRL-let's meet in real life
P911-parent nearby
PAL-Parent's are listening
PAW-Parent's are watching
PIR-parent in room
POS-parent over shoulder
WYCM-will you call me
